The City of New York would rename a street in honour of Private 1st Class Emmanuel Mensah, the Ghanaian soldier who recently died in a fire he was saving some people from.
Mensah saved four people from the burning building in Prospect Avenue in the Bronx, but died when he went back in for the fourth time to bring out other people.
The New York Daily News reports that City Councilman Richie Torres has announced a plan to rename a street in the city after Mensah, who hails from Ghana.
“Emmanuel Mensah represents the best that this country and this community has to offer,” he said at a ceremony attended by Mensah’s father.

“He should be memorialized. The purpose of recording history is to never forget. And we will record the name of your son so that his heroism in our darkest moments need not be forgotten.” the councilman told Mr Mensah.

Mensah’s father said he was grateful for the honour, which would cement his son’s legacy.
“That is going to be nice on his legacy,” the senior Mensah said. “He will be remembered forever. He’s gone, but when I see the street with his name on it, that will put me in a good mood.
“Naming a street after him will keep him here forever.” he added.
Mensah would also be honoured by the U.S Army, which would posthumously award him the Medal of Valor and a Soldier’s Medal.
