Top 10 Most Underrated One Direction Songs
We’ve all been there: listening to an album, finding one song that you absolutely fall in love with, and the musician pretends like that song doesn’t exist. Unfortunately, One Direction seem to hold the title of ‘Most Songs Ignored by an Artist.’ With One Direction’s last single before the hiatus, History, being released on January 16, we thought it was time to give these iconic songs the recognition they deserve, so here are the top 10 most underrated 1D songs:
10. Over Again
This iconic ballad deserved to be sung at every One Direction show ever. Whether it was the slow melodic tune, or the clear vocals of everyone in the band, or just the fact that it was the most beautiful song ever made everyone fall in love with it. We have yet to meet someone who doesn’t at least appreciate this work of art. And yet, 1D pretend that they’ve never heard of such a song. All we ask is for the song to be put on one setlist. Or all of them.
9. Truly, Madly, Deeply
Now this song didn’t even make it onto the official album. It was a bonus track. Only for the Target store copies. What kind of bad publicity stunt?! This acoustic masterpiece is one of the best songs on their entire discography, and yet they didn’t even release it on the official album! We swear their management wants them to fail.
8. Change My Mind
If you haven’t caught on to the common theme yet, all of the previously mentioned songs have been on One Direction’s second studio album, Take Me Home. Again, their management is setting them up to flop. Take Me Home had so many single worthy songs, or at least setlist worthy, but they chose Live While We’re Young as the main single (not saying LWWY isn’t a summer bop!). Change My Mind has some of Zayn and Liam’s best solos on the whole album and is such a simple song yet so stunningly beautiful. We demand justice.
7. They Don’t Know About Us
It seems the boys hate their second album, as, yet again, one of their best songs is to be ignored. This piano-based bop incorporates and highlights every single one of the boys and adds their own unique flair to each part. 10/10 would recommend.
6. Home
This Mona Lisa is from the boys’ newest album, Made In the A.M. Wait, scratch that, it was not on the album. It was released separately. And only in the UK. WHAT?! Okay, eventually it was released worldwide, but we’re pretty sure it’s only because people wouldn’t stop complaining about how good it was and demanded justice. Personally, we think Home would’ve been a much better single than Perfect, but hey, that’s just us.
5. Fireproof
Ah, yes. Finally a song that got some recognition. One Direction released Fireproof sort of as a teaser for their new album at the time, Four. The song was free-which was a plus-and was amazing-double plus. But it seemed that as the actual album was released, people abandoned Fireproof in preference to hearing new songs. Poor Fireproof, left behind.
4. Right Now
Yes, Zayn isn’t in the band anymore. But was this song Zayn’s best song? Yes. Very much yes. That falsetto in the chorus gets us every time.
3. Half a Heart
Okay, forget what we said about the previous song. This song is truly Zayn’s best. The other boys definitely carry the verses and harmonies, but Zayn really takes the chorus. When we think of Right Now and Half a Heart, all we can think of is Zayn. Not to mention Half a Heart is literally poetry that could match Walt Whitman.
2. Same Mistakes
Off of their first album Up All Night, Same Mistakes really was a shoe-in for being a great single. Again, ignored. We would give all our money and our left arm to hear Same Mistakes live in concert. People think of Up All Night as a childish bubblegum pop album, but we see it as the album of great pop tunes.
9. Truly, Madly, Deeply
Last but not least, this beautiful treasure that is Through the Dark. This one was not completely ignored. The boys did perform it on Saturday Night Live and at a handful of Where We Are Tour shows, but for the most part, the public seemed uninterested. The fans, on the other hand, were all over it. Whether it be the guitar or the harmonies, something about it stuck with them.
When the 1D boys return from their much needed break with some fresh music, we’re positive that this list will extend even further. But for now, we’re going to stick with these. If you’re dying of boredom waiting for the History music video, we recommend looking up these songs and really focusing on their artistry to give them the attention they deserve.
